True: The tusks are modified incisors of the upper jaw. They are anchored in the skull, have nerves and can experience pain. Tusks usually appear by the age of two to three years and grow around 10 cm per year, but are subject to wear and tear through constant use. Up to a third of the tusk is not visible and is embedded in the skull.
