Unlike most other pack animals, male wild dogs tend to stay within their natal pack’s territory throughout their lives. It is the females, often with sisters from the same litter, that will leave the pack at between 14 and 30 months old. They will travel long distances to potentially start a new pack with unrelated males. This behaviour is a good countermeasure against inbreeding.
