Solar Cooker Project

The Mfuwe Solar Cooker Project was set up by Manda Chisanga, one of The Bushcamp Company’s guides, after he became the joint winner of Wanderlust magazine’s inaugural Paul Morrison Guide Award in 2006. The first solar cookers were introduced to Mfuwe in 2007, and received a warm welcome. Working with South Africa-based company SunFire Solutions, over 20 cookers have since been installed, allowing dozens of families to reduce their need for fuel wood. The women have also been able to radically reduce the number of firewood-collecting trips they make. In fa ct, the Mfuwe project has the potential to be a blueprint for solar cooker use throughout Africa – a first truly successful example of the technology in use, and one with far-reaching effects. Manda has recently shown a keen interest in exploring how the project might branch out into supplying the community with ‘rocket stoves’ that use ‘bio-briquettes’.
